The continent of Africa is home to more than fifty countries and one billion people. It is also home to some of the world’s most vibrant economies. The Economist, for example, recently predicted that seven of the world’s ten fastest growing economies in the next five years will be African. Unfortunately, much of the continent continues to face challenges around eradicating poverty, improving health, resolving conflict, and ending corruption. Marked by fast growth, limited growth or no growth at all, Africa’s business, government and civil sectors all need world-class management.

| Call for Submissions - AOM Africa Conference | The Academy of Management is calling for submissions (papers, symposia) for the AOM Africa Conference, January 7-10, 2013 at the Gordon Institute of Business Science in Johannesburg, South Africa. The purpose of this conference is to bring Africa’s unique capabilities and needs to the attention of the world’s organization and management scholars and at the same time, to provide an opportunity for interested colleagues to collaborate and work on the many interesting theoretical and practice problems presented in Africa.

| Call for Reviewers - Africa Conference | Show your support for the AOM Africa Conference and get involved!
The Academy is calling for reviewers for the Academy of Management Africa Conference. This exciting event will be held January 7-10, 2013 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Dedicated volunteers are being recruited to serve as reviewers for the conference program. Reviewers will be asked to evaluate papers and symposia based on the four conference track themes. If you are interested in being a part of the program development, please sign up as a volunteer reviewer for this conference.

| Call for Nominations - Everett Cherrington Hughes Award | The Hughes Award recognizes scholarship which has made a significant contribution to the task of linking careers theory with the broader field of organization studies.
The Careers Division’s premier award, the Everett Cherrington Hughes Award for Careers Scholarship is a way of honoring those who have worked to build bridges between careers and other areas of organizational inquiry. There is no requirement, express or implied, that the recipient of the award be a current or former member of the Careers Division, or of the Academy. The aim of this award is to acknowledge the work of scholars who have forged, rather than severed, connections between careers and other fields of social inquiry.

If you hold an assistant professor rank (or its equivalent) and teach or research in the TIM domain, this professional development workshop is for you. The workshop will make available the knowledge that you need to prosper in both the local and global academic environment. The workshop focuses on strategies for impact as a scholar and teacher, as well as on building a career in diverse professional settings.

| Call for Submissions - Gender in Management | Gender in Management - An International Journal is currently seeking submissions for publication in the 2012 volume
Gender in Management: An International Journal (formerly Women in Management Review) is a double blind peer reviewed journal which publishes original, critical and scholarly papers that make theoretical and methodological contributions to our understanding of gender-based issues in management. The journal encourages diversity in thinking about gender in management and welcomes papers from all academic disciplines which can contribute to management knowledge about this area. Whilst focusing on management concerns, the journal acknowledges the importance of a broader social context influencing gender in management issues, such as political and legislative decisions, education and social policy, economic factors, etc. Papers which examine gender-based management issues in specific industries or sectors are encouraged.

A best paper award of $5000 for members of under-represented U. S. minority groups will be presented by the Massachusetts Business School Collaborative at the Academy of Management meeting in Boston during the August 2012 Annual Meeting. The Massachusetts Business School Collaborative Award is designed to improve recruitment and retention prospects of under-represented individuals of color in business schools.

| Strategic Plan in Action: AFD Workshops | Africa Faculty Development Workshops
The first Africa Faculty Development Workshop was held in Accra, Ghana, December 11-17, 2011. This inaugural workshop welcomed junior faculty and advanced PhD students from Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Uganda for a weeklong seminar at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration. Another AFD Workshop will be held in Kigali, Rwanda this June.

| New Book Announcement - Cliques and Capitalism | De Lange suggests a new contextually linked building block model to develop theories of the firm in the field of strategy and organizations. Using this approach, she proposes two models: one that is a realistic American version and another that is a futuristic sustainable model. Both are new networked models that integrate current theories; a review of international corporate governance supports the sustainable firm that solves problems of the current one.

| In Memoriam - Paul S Goodman | Carnegie Mellon University Professor Paul S. Goodman, world-renowned organizational psychologist, researcher, author and filmmaker, passed away at his home in Pittsburgh on Jan. 24 after suffering a stroke earlier this year. He was 74.
Goodman joined the faculty at Carnegie Mellon in 1972, becoming a tenured professor of industrial administration and psychology in 1979. In 2000, he became the Richard M. Cyert Professor of Organizational Psychology and dedicated himself to the globalization of Carnegie Mellon, bringing to the university an international focus in education and research.
