Mentoring Best Practices Award

Academy of Management Mentoring Committee

The Mentoring Committee is currently inviting applicants for the Mentoring Best Practices Award. This annual award is given in odd years to the person(s) or institution(s) who develop and implement a program or activity that promotes mentoring within the Academy. The purpose of this award is to recognize and encourage institutional initiatives that provide developmental support to Academy members at all levels (students, junior faculty, senior faculty, postdoctoral fellows, practitioners). While we believe that one-to-one mentoring is very important, we are not seeking nominations for individuals who have acted as mentors. Several divisions offer "Best Mentor" awards for that type of activity. Examples of potential candidates for this award include, but are not limited to, research incubators or formal mentoring programs.

Well, most of the work is done, and I am pleased to report to you about the upcoming 67th AOM annual meeting in Philadelphia, PA. We are extremely pleased with the number of submissions received and believe the result will be a great program -- one we hope will continue the long trend of growth in program attendance. The city of Philadelphia provides us with a cluster of hotels that surround the Pennsylvania Convention Center which is next door to the famous Reading Terminal Market. We are also only a few steps away from some of the major sights in the city including the Constitution Center, Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the Philadelphia Arts Museum and its famous “Rocky” steps.

2007 PDW Program

Jim Walsh, Vice President Elect and Program Chair Elect
University of Michigan

I recently stumbled upon a greeting card that said “Blah Blah Blah” on the outside and then “Here’s your card!” on the inside. I worry that these kinds of newsletter articles have that same feel. How many of you are waiting for me to tell you that next summer’s PDW program will be “interesting” and “innovative,” the best yet? Are you also expecting a personal invitation to arrive “early” and attend a session or two? I will not disappoint. Yes, the PDW program is terrific and yes, I would love to see you in Philadelphia on August 3rd. Have I said enough? Should you stop reading right now? The answer to both questions is no. Please take a minute or two to learn more about what waits for you in Philadelphia this summer.
